Movie Review: ‘About Time’
Hi friends,
Who doesn’t love a good movie poster!
Last week we talked about some hard truths, so I wanted to bring y’all some movie reviews this weekend to lighten the air. Be on the look out for a few more reviews at the weekend carries on!
Today, I wanted to talk about a movie I recently watched with my dad and absolutely adored titled “About Time” staring Rachel McAdams (love her first off) and Domhnall Gleeson; McAdams and Gleeson play main characters Mary and Tim respectively, and I truly believe they both played their roles to the absolute best of their abilities.
The movie begins following Tim, a 21-year-old who just discovered from his father a large family secret that alters his entire life path. The secret you ask? Tim’s father tells him that the men in their family have the capability of traveling back in time to places and dates they were present in. While they cannot directly change history, Tim learns that by changing his actions during moments in the past he is able to change the trajectory of his present. With this newfound ‘power,’ Tim sets off to change his life by getting a girlfriend- this is where we are introduced to Mary. After some trials and errors, his time traveling capabilities, and a hint of charm, Tim finally wins to heart of Mary, leading to what Tim thought would be the perfect life- but as everyone in life knows, this is nearly impossible to accomplish.
Tim begins to use his powers to navigate the chaos of family life, but he quickly learns while trying to save his sister that this can lead to challenges in the time ripple. After learning how to safely use his time traveling powers in a better manner, Tim learns that his father is dying from terminal cancer. He uses the time left with his father, traveling back to visit him even after his father has passed.
Tim once again learns though that continuing to live in the past prevents him from fully living his life in the present; he learns that in order for life changing decisions to be made in the present, he can no longer go back to certains days in the past. After one last visit with his dad, Tim takes his dad’s advice about how to properly use this time travel. (The last scene with his dad was so heartful and simply beautiful; I absolutely cried during this scene which is why I am leaving it vague because the shock factor is needed for viewers to grasp all the emotions available.)
Tim ultimately learns how to live his life in the present, appreciating it for what it is without altering the past; he learns that everyday life can be magical if he simply just looked around more.
I loved the final message of the movie- that one should appreciate the mundane, do not dwell on the past, and live each day with intentionality. The movie truly made me really reflect on how I was living my everyday life, and more so on how to be more appreciative of that life. “About Time” made me laugh, made me smile, made me sad, made me cry, and it made me think. I love how many emotions such a seemingly simple movie made me feel.
I overall would rate this movie an 7.8/10. If you are looking for a feel-good movie, this is definitely one I would recommend- the depth of it made it simply even better.
